Port Consultative Meeting Report

REPORT BY WONG YIM FATT ON PORT CONSULTATIVE MEETING @ G-HOTEL ON 9-7-2010
Attended by PPC Chairman, PPSB Chairman, Senior officials of various related Ministries (M. O. T., MITI, MIDA,SMIDEC)
and D-G of EPU.


In the meeting the following were highlighted and discussed:-
   
1)
Nationwide, only Penang having a Cruise vessels terminal (PICT) and hope other parts will follow suit for better collaboration to induce more International Cruise Operators to choose Malaysia as a destination for their tour vessels to call.
   
2)
Further networking exercise will be carried out regionally with Trang/ Thailand, Indonesia and China.
   
3)
The MOT has confirmed that the formation of National Port Commission (NPC) is called off and instead a “Majlis Perundang and Pelabuhan Negara “(National Port Consultative Council) will replace it.
   
4)
PPC will move to the 2nd floor of PICT, Swettenham Pier in October 2010 from the present office at Sri Weld.
   
5)
The D-G of EPU highlighted positively that the capital dredging of RM 350 million will be approved in the 10th MP for the Penang Channel to dredge to a 14.5 metre draft. Currently @ 11.5 metre and alongside the berth @ 12 metre under maintenance dredging.
   
6)
PPC has identified four cargo centers to capture the export containers using Penang Port facilities:-
  I. Kantang
II. Surathani
III. Padang Besar
IV. Betong
   
That could provide more than 70,000 TEUs per annum.
   
7)
The regions centers of:-
 
a) Chittagong -Yangon - Penang = 505,000 TEUs
b) Lhokseumave - Belawan - Penang = 123,000 TEUs
   
 
are also traffic routes that could be promoted seriously to enhance a consistent throughput for Penang Port.
